NSF: An interesting press release (gadolinium mention and affects)
A press release about an alternative means to MRI contrast dyes, including those which contain gadolinium. See the link here..
What I found interesting from the press release are these two snippets on gadolinium and its affect on patients with kidney disease who have been given a contrast dye agent prior to an MRI:
In kidney disease, the cleansing system slows down, allowing the chelate and the gadolinium to separate, which exposes the patient to the toxic metal molecule.
And this one:
The FDA has issued a black-box warning to heighten awareness about the risk of NSF/NFD, particularly in patients with kidney and liver problems.
So the FDA has released a warning to raise awareness, but gadolinium is still being used for contrast dye agents in MRI. Time to reconsider using that particular diagnostic tool.
It is a matter of time, in my opinion, before the FDA actually steps in and bans or limits the use of gadolinium-based contrast dyes for MRI scans.
